Collector checklist and buying paths
Distinguish a manufacturing mechanism from scratches, impacts, heat and chemical damage. Avoid treating a single photo or seller phrase as proof.
- Look for evidence that metal moved during a strike versus being cut, squeezed or corroded afterward.
- Compare rim shape, edge consistency and how design elements react near the suspicious area.
- Use established attribution references for die varieties; the same mark repeated across dies has a different explanation.
