Why this hub exists
Every dealer who handles errors has the same experience: for every genuine error that comes across the counter, many coins arrive that are damaged, worn, altered, or simply normal. The owners are not foolish. The coins genuinely look wrong. The problem is that a coin can look wrong for an enormous number of reasons, and only a few of those reasons are mint processes.
This hub is organized by the thing you see. Find the feature that made you suspect the coin, read the not-an-error explanation, and apply the test. If the coin passes the test — if it is not the look-alike — go back to the master guide and work forward. If it fails, you have your answer, and you have saved a submission fee.
Post-mint damage
Post-mint damage is anything that happened to the coin after it left the press. It is the largest category on this page and the least valuable: damaged coins are worth less than undamaged ones, never more.
Scratches, gouges, and dents are incuse. A die can only raise metal; it cannot cut it. Any feature that goes into the coin's surface was made by something other than a die. The exception is the incuse ghost of a die clash, which is faint, matches the opposite design exactly, and sits in the fields. A random incuse line is a scratch.
Bright edges on a dull coin. Damage exposes fresh metal. On a circulated coin with toned or worn surfaces, a feature with bright, sharp edges happened recently, not at the mint. Genuine mint features on a circulated coin are as worn and toned as the rest of the coin.
Displaced metal. A hit pushes metal up around the impact point in a raised ridge. That ridge is the giveaway on dents and on the rim damage that people mistake for a cud or a clip.
Holes, bends, and cuts. A holed coin was drilled or punched. A bent coin was bent. A coin with a section cut off has a bright cut edge and a full rim opposite; a genuine clip has a weak rim opposite, which is the Blakesley effect described in the error types hub.
Heat, acid, and chemical damage. Coins that have been in a fire, in a chemical solution, or in an acidic environment show pitting, etching, discoloration, and surface loss across the whole coin. Acid-treated coins in particular can look like odd planchet errors; they are lighter than standard because metal has been dissolved, and their surfaces are uniformly eaten. A genuine planchet error has normal surfaces where the metal is present.

Machine doubling
Machine doubling is the single most common reason a coin is mistaken for a valuable error. During or immediately after the strike, the die shifts slightly — it bounces, twists, or chatters — and its edge scrapes the just-raised design, pushing metal sideways. The result is a flat, low shelf beside the letters or devices, often bright and smeared, usually on one side of the affected elements.
Machine doubling is not a doubled die. It has no catalog number and is not certified as an error.
It is common enough on some dates that nearly every coin from certain die pairs shows it. It varies from coin to coin, because it is a property of each strike, not of the die. And it is not certified: the grading services will note machine doubling on a submission and return the coin without an error designation. Die deterioration doubling
A die wears as it strikes. Late in its life the metal at the edges of the design flows outward, and the elements nearest the rim — the date, the mint mark, the outer lettering — develop a swollen, mushy appearance with a soft duplicate outline. The fields near the rim take on an orange-peel texture. This is die deterioration doubling, and it is a die state, not a die error.
Because it is a die state, it does appear on every coin from that die in that state, which is why it fools people who know that doubled dies repeat. The difference is that a doubled die shows crisp, separated, notched doubling from the die's first strike onward, while die deterioration shows soft, swollen doubling that appears only late and worsens. The missing mint mark
For most of United States history, coins struck at Philadelphia carried no mint mark. A cent, nickel, dime, quarter, or half dollar with no mint mark is, for nearly every date, a normal Philadelphia coin. The genuine no-mint-mark errors are a handful of specific proof issues where the mint mark was omitted from a die that should have carried it, and those are well documented and easy to look up. A related confusion is the filled or weak mint mark. A mint mark partly filled by grease or debris in the die is a minor struck-through, common and of little value. A mint mark weakened by die wear is a die state. Neither is a missing mint mark.
Color: plating, toning, and chemistry
A coin that is the wrong color is almost never the wrong metal. Cents get plated for novelty and for school chemistry demonstrations; silver-colored cents are usually zinc- or mercury-plated normal cents. Coins tone in air, in albums, in envelopes, and in the ground, and the range of colors toning produces is wide. Coins exposed to cleaners, acids, and heat discolor in every direction.
The test is weight. A wrong-metal planchet has a different weight from the standard for that coin, and a plated or toned coin has the standard weight. Color does not prove wrong metal explains the test; calibrating your scale is the prerequisite.
The special case that matters most is the 1943 cent. Genuine 1943 cents are steel and are attracted to a magnet. A copper-colored 1943 cent is almost always either a plated steel cent, which sticks to a magnet, or an altered 1948 cent, which does not stick and has the wrong weight and the wrong shape of 3. Vise jobs and squeeze jobs
A vise job is a coin pressed against another coin, or against a hard object, hard enough to transfer an impression. The result can resemble a brockage, a double strike, or a struck-through. The tells are that the impression is crude and incomplete; that it is not expanded the way a genuine brockage is; that the coin shows displaced metal and flattening around the impression; and that the impression was made on a coin that already had wear, so the original design under the impression is worn while the impression itself is sharp.
A genuine brockage or double strike was made at the press on a fresh planchet, and every part of it is fully struck. A vise job never achieves that, because a vise cannot generate the pressure or the geometry of a coining press.
Deliberate alterations
Some coins are altered to imitate errors or rare dates. Mint marks are added or removed with tools. Dates are re-engraved. Two coins are cut and joined. Plating is applied to imitate a wrong metal. These are not errors and, when sold as errors, are fraud.
Alterations show tool marks under magnification: fine parallel scratches from abrasives, disturbed metal around a mint mark, a seam on a joined coin, a mint mark with the wrong shape or position for the date. Roller marks, counting wheels, and album damage
Several specific kinds of damage are so common that they deserve their own entries, because each one has been mistaken for an error over and over.
Each of these is a damage type with its own signature, and once you have seen a few examples of each you will recognize them on sight. Until then, the incuse test and the bright-edge test resolve nearly all of them.
Roller marks and planchet-strip lines are fine parallel lines across a coin's surface from the strip before striking. They are technically mint-made, but they are a planchet characteristic, not an error, and they carry no premium. Counting-wheel and coin-wrapping damage is a curved scrape or gouge, often near the rim, from bank counting and rolling equipment; it is incuse and post-mint. Album and folder damage includes slide marks, which are parallel scratches across the high points from a plastic album slide, and PVC damage, which is a green or brown film from plasticizer migrating out of old holders. Staple scratches are short, straight, bright scratches from a staple in a cardboard flip. Pocket and jar wear is uniform abrasion on the high points with bag marks in the fields.
None of these is an error, and all of them lower a coin's grade. The common thread is that they are incuse, they are on top of the design rather than part of it, and each has a mundane explanation that any dealer will recognize instantly.
Environmental damage and ground finds
Coins recovered by metal detecting, from gardens, from old buildings, and from bodies of water have been in a chemically active environment for years or decades. Corrosion eats the surface, sometimes uniformly and sometimes in patches that mimic laminations or struck-throughs. Mineral deposits crust the surface. Zinc cents in the ground pit and swell in ways that resemble planchet flaws. Silver in the ground can develop a black sulfide layer that flakes and looks like a lamination.
Detectorists are a large share of the people who bring suspect coins to error dealers, and the coins they bring are almost always damaged rather than erroneous, not because their eyes are poor but because a decade in wet soil does things to a coin that no mint process does. Wheat cents come up with laminated-looking crusts. Silver dimes come up with black flaking. Clad coins come up with the copper core exposed in patches that look like a missing clad layer. Each of these has a genuine error counterpart, and each is far more often the damage.
The test is the surface where the metal remains. A genuine planchet flaw leaves normal, struck surfaces around it. Environmental damage leaves eaten, pitted, or crusted surfaces everywhere, and the apparent flaw is just the worst area. A ground find with an unusual feature is a ground find with unusual damage, almost without exception, and it should be evaluated as a damaged coin before anything else.
Worn, weak, and normal
Some coins are simply worn. A heavily circulated coin loses its high points first, and a weak date, a weak mint mark, and missing detail are wear, not error. Some coins were weakly struck from the start, and a weak strike is a known characteristic of certain dates and mints, not an error unless it reaches the level of a die adjustment strike. Some coins are normal for a variety the collector did not know existed — a design change, a mint mark position, a font — and the reference for those is a standard catalog, not an error guide.
The habit that resolves all of these is comparison. Find a certified normal example of the same date and mint, and look at your coin next to it. What is different, and could a mint process have produced the difference? If the answer is wear, chemistry, or a tool, you have a normal coin.
What to do with a not-an-error coin
Keep it if you like it. Spend it if you do not. Do not submit it for certification hoping for a different answer; the services see every one of the look-alikes on this page every day and will return the coin with the fee spent. And do not list it as an error, because the market for errors is small, expert, and unforgiving of listings that describe damage as a mint mistake.

Frequently asked questions
My coin has doubled letters. Is it a doubled die?
Usually not. If the doubling is flat, shelf-like, shiny, and lower than the main image, it is machine doubling. If it is mushy and swollen near the rim, it is die deterioration. A true doubled die shows rounded, separated doubling at full height with notched serifs.
My coin has no mint mark. Is it an error?
Almost never. Philadelphia coins carried no mint mark for most US history. The genuine exceptions are a few specific proof issues that are well documented.
My cent is silver colored. Is it a wrong metal error?
Almost certainly plated. Weigh it: a plated cent has the standard weight for its date. A genuine wrong-planchet coin has the weight of the other coin's planchet.
Is a scratch or gouge ever a mint error?
No. Dies raise metal; they cannot cut it. Any incuse mark other than the faint ghost of a die clash was made after the coin left the mint.
